Question:
Salam Mufti
I have a question on matters of faith
I would like to know do doubts in islam make muslim a kafir, if a muslim is not absolutely certain that Islam is the only true religion or is not 100% certain that Quran is a divine book has he/she left the fold of islam?
Please guide me in this very important matter.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the most Gracious the most Merciful,
Wa alaikum Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,
Doubts are wasawis (whispers) from Shaytan and they don't make a Muslim kafir as long as one doesn't come to believe in them.
One must try their utmost to shrug off such thoughts and never give them voice.
A very strong reason for doubts about Islam itself is the lack of knowledge, as all objections and criticisms levied against it has been dispelled by Allah swt himself in the Qur'an and through the teachings of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and the works of great scholars.
That being said, believing in the truthfulness and finality of Islam and believing Qur'an to be the word of Allah and guidance for mankind are our fundamental beliefs, it is necessary to have firm belief in them. If someone has doubt then he should read لاحول ولا قوۃ الا باللہ and renew his faith by reciting Kalimah (Shahadah) and must say that he is believing in these things without any doubt.
If, someone, despite all this still continues to doubt Islam and Qur'an and voicing his doubts towards them and explicitly claims to not believe in the entire Qur'an and it's message, he has committed Kufr and has been expelled from the fold of Islam.
And Allah knows best
Mufti Umer Farooq Saleem
