Question:
Assalamalikum mufti. Last year I commited a sin and I have been feeling guilt asking allah for forgiveness since. This year I found my father is ill with cancer and I feel as though this is a punishment for my actions. Is this true and what can I do to make sure that allah accepts my tawba and istghfrar. Thank you.
Answer:
Wa alaikum Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,
In the name of Allah the most gracious, the most Merciful
Our Deen Islam is very practical and our Lord Allah is the most Just. No person is made to bear the consequences of a sin of another, if they had no role to play in it. We, servants of Allah, do commit a lot of sins but our Rabb is the most gracious and merciful towards us. Allah says in the Qur'an:
قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعاً إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ
Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
This is the verse of hope, it tells us that all manner of sins are surely forgiven by Allah if he/she sincerely repents and seeks forgiveness. And once you have repented, a hadith of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم so beautifully explains it:
"The one who has repented from the sin is like the one who has not sinned at all"
Allah swt completely removes that sin from us and saves us from it's negative effects.
The condition of your father is a test of Allah for him in this world, through these trials, Allah forgives the transgressions of his slaves and elevates their rank in Jannah. Make du'a for him and serve him in his time of need, that will be your path to Jannah as well inshaAllah.
And Allah knows best
